Welcome to My Longevity

Time is our most precious asset. It defines our life journey. As we get older, it’s increasingly important to make the best of the rest of it. Because we become more different from each other over time, it makes sense to know our own remaining time frame – our longevity - as well as we can, as we explain here. So, average numbers from the national Life Tables don’t define our own journey.

The average lifespan at birth in developed countries has more than doubled over the past 200 years, reflecting the impact of the Industrial Revolution, not natural evolution. There are credible views about newborns Living to 100. Developed societies increasingly took advantage of the growth of knowledge about healthy ageing to increase lifespans. By applying this personally, we can influence our own quality and length of life.

Our most precious asset is time, which defines our life journey. With increasing age it’s important to make the best of our remaining time. Because we become more different to each other over time, it’s worth understanding how much time we may have left - our longevity - as we explain here. The average numbers we get from the national Life Tables don’t define our own journey.

In developed countries, the average lifespan at birth has more than doubled over the past two centuries, reflecting the power of the Industrial Revolution. Evolution is not the cause. Living to 100 is now a credible possibility for babies. Developed Societies increased lifespans by applying the growth of knowledge about healthy ageing. By applying this knowledge, we can increasingly influence our own quality and length of life.

Our life journey is defined by time, our most precious asset. It becomes increasingly important to make the best of what is left. Since we become more different from each other over time, a focus on our own remaining time frame – our longevity – makes a lot of sense, as explained here. The averages from the national Life Tables don’t define our own journey.

How long a baby survives in developed countries has more than doubled over the past 200 years, reflecting the impact of the Industrial Revolution, not natural evolution. These countries increasingly used the growth of knowledge about healthy ageing to increase lifespans. By applying this to ourselves, we can influence our own quality and length of life, and living to 100 is increasingly likely for babies.

AUSTRALIAN LIFE TABLES

For a large group of people of the same age, it is possible to estimate their average life expectancy. These calculations are usually done after each Census and are called Life Tables.

Because people are increasingly different from each other as they age, there are problems with these numbers:

  • They are averages and don't take account of individual variations

  • They don't take account of the ongoing trend of people living longer

Over the last twenty years or so there has been an explosion in well-researched information about what affects personal longevity. We developed the SHAPE Analyser to take account of how this can affect individuals and what their own future might look like, building on the basic data in the Life Tables.

New information is constantly being published. We regularly update the SHAPE Analyser and website to take account of these developments, including when the Life Tables change.

MORE ABOUT LONGEVITY

For people the same age, the national Life Tables show their average life expectancy. But who knows if they are ‘average’?

The figure shows for those aged 65 what % are likely to die in groups of five years. The average survival is 21 years and sits inside the dark blue column. But this only contains less than a quarter of the age 65 group. So, most of us are not ‘average’. At 65, men are typically expected to live about three years less than women.
